Right now we have a set of revised dictionaries and thesauruses from American Heritage. I would like to see someone take all eight of these and compare/contrast them to other published titles at the same levels, from a picture dictionary to college level. You would need to use the library or school classrooms to find dictionaries from other publishers. Here’s the list: The American heritage first dictionary Houghton Mifflin Harcourt The American heritage picture dictionary Houghton Mifflin Harcourt The American heritage children's dictionary Houghton Mifflin Harcourt The American heritage student dictionary Houghton Mifflin Harcourt The American heritage children's thesaurus Hellweg, Paul Houghton Mifflin Harcourt The American Heritage college dictionary Houghton Mifflin Harcourt The American Heritage high school dictionary Houghton Mifflin Harcourt The American heritage student thesaurus Houghton Mifflin Harcourt You might be interested to know that, when Webster’s Third International Unabridged Dictionary came out a number of years ago, they discontinued evaluating words by their place in our society. In the past, they had marked fringe words with labels like these: slang, vulgarity, obscenity, etc. They openly stated that they would no longer be the judge of what words were acceptable in our society. To cover that loss, American Heritage took on the task of producing an unabridged dictionary which did label unacceptable words, and they continue to this day. One more note: watch out for Webster on a dictionary cover. It is used indiscrimately, after the Noah Webster who introduced the first American English dictionary, recognizing that English is different in America as it was in England in his day. Only dictionaries published by Merriam-Webster are the real thing. Others are usually cheap poorly done publications. Anybody interested?
