Excellent Books by Jean Little 2.12.2013

Jean Little, of Canada, was born to missionary doctor parents in China. She struggled with poor vision until finally being placed in a sight-saving class back home in Canada. Over the years she taught school and wrote poetry and books, many of the latter featuring disabled children.

Her first fictional “memoir” is told of her mother’s life as child of missionaries in China. Her mother told her”it wasn’t exactly like that, but made a good story.” The following two books trace her own life from China to Canada to blindness and her seeing eye dog.

The two books below feature a girl with poor vision, who comes to Canada from Hitler’s Germany before WWII. These two are my favorites of her books for kids. They are out of print, but well worth hunting for.
